On the back of the game manual is the code (mine was fifteen characters) you need to use to register the game to Steam.

Inside the box there should be TWO documents, the Square Enix registration card and the game manual (which is just a few pages long). until I realized there are two different activation codes. This is way late, but I just installed Dungeon Siege III and thought I had hit this problem. There are some more soldiers here, so defeat them and then head to the back left cell to meet with a man named Fitch. Defeat the enemies, then step on the switch and you'll be treated to an animation of the door opening, where you triggered the side quest. In the side chamber, you'll find some enemies and also a switch on the grass. Set your quest marker accordingly to make it easy to keep your directions straight. You can't open the building just yet, but you can backtrack to the previous chamber and then head through the side gate (which is now on your right as you backtrack).
